We use advanced machine learning algorithms and thousands of game results to estimate the relative performance of any two teams. This lets us rank teams even if they have never directly played each other. It is easy to identify the stronger team when two teams play head-to-head. But what if TeamA only plays in Atlanta, and TeamB only plays in Boston? As long as we can connect the dots between them through other teams that have played each other, our software can calibrate their relative strength.
